Director Rinku gets bail in student murder case

A Dhaka court today granted bail to television director Rafat Mozumder Rinku in a case filed over death of a college student during the quota reform protests on July 19.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman passed the order after a hearing both from the prosecution and the defence.
The defence submitted an application seeking bail on grounds that his client’s name was not included in first information report (FIR) and the case was only implicated to “harass” him. He has never held any post of Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League.
However, the prosecution opposed bail of the accused saying that Rinku was found present at the spot of the incident during the time of occurrence and was found involved in the murder.
Earlier on September 23, Rinku was arrested from the capital’s Gulshan area. The following day, he was sent to jail in connection with the case.
According to the case documents, Md Naimur Rahman, a 22-year-old student of Gulshan Degree College, was shot in front of Subastu Nazar Valley shopping mall in Gulshan-2 around 4:00pm on July 19 by Awami League activists while participating in a protest rally of the movement.
Naimur was taken to AMZ Hospital in Badda, where he succumbed to injuries.
His father Khalilur Rahman filed the case against 64 people including Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Nur-e Alam Chowdhury Liton, Mojibur Rahman, Nasrul Hamid Chowdhury Bipu, and Mohammad A Arafat.
